Mehhu's reflections 16 April 2010

This is almost end of week 6 of our travelling and the longest time both of us have been away from home. While some of you may be envious of us travelling, believe it or not, there are days we are envious of you being at home/work.  There were days when we dreamt of work, miss our work cubicle and colleagues.

It’s interesting to observe how our state of mind changes over the week. Week 1 & 2 were probably the most exciting as we learnt and observe how things work around here. There were a lot more anticipations and interests in a lot of things. Week 3-4 were still fun and things did start to slow down a little, seeing lesser sights if we do not feel like it, take our time, soak in things…bought more books to read and spending more time in cafes, watching HBOs movies...
Week 5 came the challenge or maybe the road block. I never thought I would miss home this much. I started to miss families, friends, food, stability and comfort in S’pore..

Things that warms our hearts and make us miss home..
1)    See families on Skype and talk to them. Seeing how enthusiastic our niece and nephew waved to us and calling us
2)    TXP frens who responded enthusiastically to my SOS email for nursery rhymes
3)    Chatted with Lena over Gmail and she gave me a Big Hugz just before we end off
4)    Exchanged sms with the 15 Apr Bday gal, YH, and that she really misses us
5)    Reading friend’s comments on our blog and those who sent personal messages
6)    Receiving soccer news from YW (though Man U is prob not going to win the EPL)
7)    Friends who answered my call of help via iPhone and Gmail chat ( you did make me feel alot better just reading those replies!! =)

Things we are clearer now…
1)    We do not have vagabonds blood in our veins and cannot travel for too long.. maybe 5 weeks is good enough..
2)    We do not have to see the WHOLE world and can probably not see the WHOLE world. Ok to miss out certain things in LIFE. (Jeff says Manchester is still on the list!)
3)    At the age of 30s, we now know that we actually like comfort, stability and simplicity. (Being with Shao Ye for too long, I think I have become Tai tai unknowingly and threw away my adventurous self over the years..)
4)    We are unlike the fellow travelers we have met who can nuar at the one place for too long...
Things we are doing differently...
1)    Read more books than we have ever read for the last 3 years.
2)    Ate more capsicums, onions and tomatoes than we have ever had for the last 10 years.
3)    Consumed more coke in the last 5 weeks than we ever had for the last 5 years.
4)    Body adapting well without washing hands after toilet visits.
We have 1 more week of travelling to go and look forward to our volunteer work on week 8. A break from travelling and sightseeing. Haha. How ironic!
Meanwhile, off to India’s Holy Ganges River tonite for a week..…
Big HUGZ to everyone back home... =)

  2. Feelings about travelling while travelling will always go up and down. For
me the hardest bit was also around week 6 to 8 or so. Trust me, before you know it you can't imagine having longed back to work and you will enjoy the travelling to the fullest again!
Enjoy guys!!!! Keep the stories coming. Reading every single one of them :-)

  3. BIG HUZ back to you both too! Sniffing away while reading your reflections on the morning of 17 Apr... a bit touched.. but more of the flu bug which is trying to bring me down hehe :P

Jia you! You guys are doing something which I don't think I (& most ppl) will ever do it. Cos after 3.5wks in Europe last yr, I felt that 2 wks of travelling should be the max for me.

Hope to have more chat seeions :) Miss boss a lot too... (By the way, CPF is recently asked to review the CPF rates, so meaning our dept may get super busy soon...)

  5. WJ is so efficient! Passed me yr laptop the next day I sms her! And here am I able to read yr blog again. Well well well...if you'd not embarked on this trip, you wld not have arrived at all these reflections..You will still be lamenting how you'd wanted to do this, but stuck in urban life's mundane stuff, wake up, go work, do housework, run errands on wkends, etc...Now that you are there,"things are clearer". So when you're back, you'll appreciate the stability n comfort here!Anyway no worries, its juz wk 6. There are more interesting stuff to look out for in the next few weeks!Hugs & kisses! Jim ji eh (hokkien)...haha..
